Success at the double for businesses

The 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards have seen success for two businesses based in the Leamington and Warwick region.

Steven Timberlake, MD of Hidden Eden, was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year and Alumet Systems of Southam took the award for Midlands Innovation of the Year.

Warwick University graduate Steven Timberlake, 24, set up Hidden Eden, an inspirational garden store with outlets in Warwick Street, Leamington Spa and in Solihull and with a substantial online presence at http://www.hiddeneden.com/ following a successful venture in video manufacturing. Leamington-based PR firm HCK Communications sponsored this award.

There was further success for Alumet Systems of Southam (http://www.alumet.co.uk/) which took the Midlands Innovation of the Year prize, sponsored by Arup. The firm, founded by Gary Summers just seven years ago, designs, manufactures and installs services such as windows and curtain walling for buildings, including aftercare and maintenance.

This was the fourth year of the awards and more than 300 people attended the ceremony at the NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel. The guest of honour was Jerry Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Harj Sandher, MD of organisers UK Special Events, the company behind the event, said: “We had some excellent entries and are delighted that the event is growing in popularity and quality. The range of talent in the Midlands is huge and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking.”

Networker Helen takes top award

Tewkesbury-based businesswoman Helen Dowling has been named the region’s top networker in the 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards.

Helen is MD of Exceptional Thinking, a marketing consultancy which aims at the small business. She received the award from Martin Davies, of sponsors NRG at a gala event at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole.

Exceptional Thinking (http://www.exceptionalthinking.co.uk/) specialises in helping people with great business ideas get them to market. It runs a series of workshops around the region together with networking events.

This was the fourth year of the awards and more than 300 people attended the ceremony at the NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel. The guest of honour was Jerry Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Helen said: “We are delighted that Exceptional Thinking has had its efforts in this field recognised. Effective networking can be the key to finding outlets for business.”

Harj Sandher, MD of organisers UK Special Events, the company behind the event, said: “We had some excellent entries and are delighted that the event is growing in popularity and quality. The range of talent in the Midlands is huge and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking.”

Tamworth nursing home is tops for service

Tamworth-based Sunningdale Nursing Home has scooped a top award for its service.

The home is part of the Restful Homes Group, which operates in the Midlands and the South of England, and the team there received the accolade in the 2010 Midlands Business Awards event held in Birmingham. Forty-two residents live at the home in Upper Gungate and receive 24-hour care from the team of dedicated professionals.

The team received their award at the gala dinner at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, which coincidentally sponsored this category of the awards.

This was the fourth year of the awards and more than 300 people attended the ceremony at the NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel. The guest of honour was Jerry Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce and Industry and there was a special award to Coventry MP Geoffrey Robinson for his lifetime contribution to business in the region.

Harj Sandher, MD of organisers UK Special Events, the company behind the event, said: “We had some excellent entries and are delighted that the event is growing in popularity and quality. The range of talent in the Midlands is huge and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking.”

Success for enterprising Warwick graduate

The 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards have seen success for Warwick University graduate Steven Timberlake. The MD of Hidden Eden was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Steven Timberlake, 24, studied Engineering and Business Studies at Warwick, graduating in 2006. He set up Hidden Eden, an inspirational garden store with outlets in Leamington Spa and Solihull and with a substantial online presence at http://www.hiddeneden.com/ following a successful venture in video manufacturing. Leamington-based PR firm HCK Communications sponsored this award.

Success at the double for Solihull businesses

Two Solihull businesses are toasting their success in the 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards.

John Cave, founder of Westhaven Worldwide Logistics (http://www.westhavenww.co.uk/) and a board director of building supplies firm EH Smith, was named Midlands Businessperson of the Year; Steven Timberlake, MD of inspirational garden products retailer Hidden Eden, took the title of Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Hidden Eden has a shop in Mell Square, Solihull. Mr Timberlake was also shortlisted in the Midlands Businessperson category.

These awards were sponsored by UK Special Events, the firm behind the Midlands Business Awards franchise and PR company HCK Communications respectively.

This was the fourth year of the awards and more than 300 people attended the ceremony at the NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel. The guest of honour was Jerry Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Mr Cave said: “We are delighted to have received official recognition for the efforts of the whole team in winning this award. Business is challenging but with the right products, determination and teamwork, success is possible.”

Mr Timberlake said the combination of a unique, high street-based retail offering, backed up by a strong online offering at http://www.hiddeneden.com/ was proving a successful formula.

Harj Sandher, MD of organisers UK Special Events, the company behind the event, said: “We had some excellent entries and are delighted that the event is growing in popularity and quality. The range of talent in the Midlands is huge and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking.”

High tech firm is pride of the Midlands

Derby-based IT solutions company PXtech has been named the Midlands Exporter of the Year in the 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards.

The firm, based at Pride Park, took the award at a gala ceremony in Birmingham. MD Richard Dorf received the accolade from John Cave, MD of sponsor Westhaven Worldwide Logistics. It was also shortlisted in the Midlands Innovation of the Year category.

PXtech (http://www.pxtech.net/) supplies IT support, development and training particularly for the education and retail sectors and it beat off four other finalists to scoop the prestigious prize. It counts the fast-growing Subway chain of shops among its client base.

This was the fourth year of the awards and more than 300 people attended the ceremony at the NEC Hilton Metropole Hotel. The guest of honour was Jerry Blackett, chief executive of Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Mr Dorf said: “We are delighted to have received official recognition for the efforts of the whole team in winning this award. Business is challenging but with the right products, determination and teamwork, success is possible.”

Harj Sandher, MD of organisers UK Special Events, the company behind the event, said: “We had some excellent entries and are delighted that the event is growing in popularity and quality. The range of talent in the Midlands is huge and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and kicking.”

Quadruple success for region’s businesses

Four businesses in the Coventry and Warwickshire area have been named as winners in the 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards.

And to complete a successful night for the region, there was a special award to Coventry North West MP Geoffrey Robinson in recognition of his lifetime contribution to business in the region.

Becki Coombe, founder of the Learn 2 Group (http://www.learn2.org.uk/) based in Bedworth, took the title of Midlands Entrepreneur of the Year, sponsored by BT. The group specialises in providing specialist education to children who would otherwise be in danger of slipping through the educational net. She also owns First4Aid, a first aid training company.

Following her in the Young Entrepreneur category was Warwick University graduate Steven Timberlake, 24, MD of Hidden Eden, an inspirational garden store with outlets in Leamington Spa and Solihull and with a substantial online presence at http://www.hiddeneden.com/.

And Coventry University (http://www.coventry.ac.uk/) was named Midlands Enterprising University of the Year in recognition of its promotion of entrepreneurship among its business students.

In his speech, Mr Robinson urged the next government, of whatever persuasion it might be, to concentrate on preserving and building up the manufacturing base of the UK.

Chamber is number one place for networking

Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and Industry is officially the best place to network.

The chamber took the title of Midlands Networking Group of the Year at the 2010 Midlands Business of the Year Awards held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel.

Director of Membership Services Henrik Court and Events and Sponsorship Executive Joanne Bullock, received the accolade from Ivan Vickers, MD of sponsor TriPhase Business Solutions.

Mr Court said: “We are delighted to have received official recognition for the efforts of the Chamber in winning this award. Providing networking opportunities is a key part of the service we offer to our members.”

She said: “I am delighted to have won this award, which belongs as much to my team as to me. The service we provide gives children who are not academically gifted the chance to find an area in which they can excel.”
